The Galle Akmeemana Centennial Lions Club held the commemoration of Melvin Jones, the founder of the Lions philosophy, along with its monthly meeting on 18.01.2026 at the residence of Lion Sal Ruk Gamage. The Melvin Jones Memorial Address was delivered by Lion Ananda Abeywickrama.

During this week, under the theme of hunger, we provided snacks to 100 Sunday school students and teachers.

Eye tracing - Damma school at Galpoththa Rajamaha Viharaya

At Galpoththa Raja Maha Viharaya we have traced vision of 160 students and found 5 students who need correction lenses. The students will be brought in to eye care for eye readings to do the spectacles. The MOH office of Akmeemana send the officers (PHI & the Assistant help screening eyes).

On 2026.01.11, under the chairmanship of Lion Iraj Gunasekara, Treasurer of the Galle Akmeemana Centennial Lions Club, food was distributed to 100 underprivileged individuals. It is noted that 100 meal packets, 100 bottles of water, and 100 yogurts were provided to them.

Women Empowerment - Cake Bakery and Confectionary course

Galupura Central started a six-month course for young women to empower them in learning the correct and the standard way of doing cakes, pastry and puddings to match the hotel industry. 11 ladies are doing the course, and our main aim is for them to start their own food production and develop their family economy. All these ladies are from needy backgrounds who should develop their financial levels to support kids who have started schooling. We have open doors for a very young student who refused to pursue higher education in school. Very happy to notice she is doing well in learning and making her way to get in to hotel school for a course after completing this. They made different types of pizza during the month. For the four lessons delivered the following cost is covered 1. Ingredients for food - Rs 120,000 2. Allowance for the chef - Rs 40,000 3.
